Tunduru District is one of the six (6) districts of Ruvuma Region. This district was established in 1905 during the colonial period when the German government built a compound in the area of ​​Kadewele near where the Revenue Authority (TRA) building is now.

Tunduru District has a size of 18,778 square kilometers. Also, the District has 7 Divisions, 39 Wards, 157 Villages, 1,166 Townships and 2 Constituencies (Tunduru North and Tunduru South). The district has 53 Honorable Councilors (39 Elected, 14 Special Seats), and 3 Honorable Members of Parliament (2 Elected and 1 Special Seat).

According to the results of the Population and Housing Census held in August, 2012, the number of residents was 298,279, of which 143,660 men (48.2%) and 154,619 (51.8%) women. In 2016, the District is estimated to have 331,821 inhabitants, of whom 159,815 are men and 172,006 are women. The average population increase in Tunduru District is 2.7 percent per year.
